One can consider them a 'living stone'- they are delicate stones that contain a higher content of water, requiring extra care. Should they need cleaning, solid opals should be cleaned gently with a mild detergent in warm water and a soft toothbrush or cloth. Avoid bleach, chemicals, harsh cleaners, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Depending on the type of opal, extreme heat can dry them out.
